Biography: Stephanie Wellman, MPAC PAC

Artist’s Statement

Light; physical and spiritual are the basis of my pastel images. The heavens offer a palette of many colors and intricate shapes. The horizon presents itself with dark silhouettes of intense form. These wondrous images hold me in a spell of amazement and must be captured and held onto. The discovery of such an intense subject – matter has played an important part in developing my career as an artist.

My images are conceived by bringing together the principals of chiaroscuro and applying the buttery sticks of pastel in layers of color on a textured surface of La Carte, acid free paper. I use the tips of my fingers to “move” the pastel around the paper, and to careful blend the colors; taking care to keep the color clean. Sharpening the pastels to a fine point enables me to produce the delicate lines. Upon completion, I do not use fixative; instead preferring to tap the work lightly on a surface to remove loose particles of pastel.

The excitement of my viewers and the inquisitive interest of pastel have given me the encouragement to explore more in-depth the great wonders of our horizons and the endless boundaries of this unique medium.
