Originally from North Western Quebec, Normand developed his artistic aptitudes at a very young age and started to experiment with oils in 1968, working on landscape, seascape, still life and life drawings. In 1970 he moved to the Ottawa area, where he continued to experiment with art subjects, discovering the world of colours, refining his skills and projecting his love of nature onto canvas, affirming his interest in landscape.
Self taught for most of this time, in 1977, he joins the Ottawa School of Art for four semesters where he discovers with fascination and amazement a world of colour, and the importance of working on location; he develops his ability with landscapes under the tutoring of Mr. Bruce Heggtveit.
At that time he was an active member of the “L’Amicale Artistique de l’Outaouais” and had opportunities to participate in numerous exhibitions arranged twice a year by this organization. He also challenged his talent, working with the medium of acrylic.
In 1979, he is introduced to the Pastel Medium, discovering its beauty and the vibrancy of colours in its purest form; he has been working with this medium ever since. He was also an active member of Nepean Art Association and the Ottawa Art Association. As a gallery artist, his works were exhibited at the “Frame and Art Shop” and the Nicholas Gallery.
In 1987, he took drawing Art classes at Algonquin College and at St Lawrence College to refine his skills. In September 1998, he joined the Ottawa School of Art and continued to concentrate on figure painting and portraiture until June 2000.
This artist’s admiration of natural settings continues to be projected in his creations, confirming his productions of landscape, still life, portrait and finally figure. The untamed and ultimate beauty of this country is a constant inspiration to him. He understands the importance of working from nature and to be on location.
He is now a full time artist finally realizing a long time dream. Normand’s philosophy in Art is to feel, express, render the beauty seen and continuously learn from the present experience. He will gladly accept commission(s).
Normand has been teaching this beautiful medium since Sept 2000.
