Kathy grew up in Ottawa, Canada. In 1973 she moved to the Lake Clear area, located between Ottawa and Algonquin Provincial Park, where she has lived for 35 years.
There, she bagan spinning natural fibers and weaving tapestries inspired by the rugged landscape of the Madawaska Hills. She also worked in stained glass and pastel before taking up oil painting. The first two shows she entered won best of show and honourable mention.
Kathy grew up surrounded by the art of her father, Arctic artist Maurice Haycock and his close painting partner of 30 years, A. Y. Jackson. Largely self taught, she cites them as her major influences. Early Arctic trips with her father introduced her to the lure of the North and inspired a sweeping and graceful rhythm in her work. Doris McCarthy praised the energetic motion and fresh expressive brushwork in her work during painting trips together in the Arctic and at McCarthy's cottage on Georgian Bay.
Inspired by the immediate and exuberant experience of painting from within the landscape, Kathy is dedicated to working outside in all seasons. Her wood panels are painted on site in vivo, or in the living landscape. Her gently rhythmic style and dynamic brushwork communicate an unabashed delight in painting the experience of being there. Her lively paintings of Algonquin Park wilderness, rural Ontario farming country, the Canadian Arctic and the American Southwest are animated with weather, wind, light rhythmic movement and sensuous forms stated with an earthy palette. She celebrates the natural world, drawing attention to the vast power yet delicate fragility of nature's often overlooked and underappreciated natural places and habitat.
Kathy's work is represented in private, public and corporate collections from the Yukon to Newfoundland, and in the USA, Europe, China and Australia.
