Biography: Heather A. Assaf

Artist Statement

From Braeside, Ontario, Canada, Heather expresses herself through the abstract qualities of shape, colour, line, pattern, form and texture. Intuitive expression is at the core of her art, stimulating the viewers’ perception and imagination to “feel” and experience the paintings from their own personal perspective.

A native of Ottawa, Ontario, Heather is a multi-media artist, mixed-media artist and an intaglio printmaker. She is proficient in pencil drawing, pen and ink, pastel, watercolour, oil, acrylic, collage, collagraph printmaking and etching as well as a combination of all or some of the above in mixed-media work.

Primarily a studio artist, she sometimes begins to work with a photo or a sketch as a starting point. Other times she uses music and one or two colours to begin, working intuitively until an image or a pattern suggests itself and then with successive glazings and layers she continues until a degree of satisfaction occurs and finally the work tells her it is finished.

Heather is currently interested in abstract qualities whether working with collagraphs and etchings or painting on canvas. Her love of vibrant colour and design shows up in all her work.

A move to the country and a new studio space with an etching press and a beautiful view of the Ottawa River provides the impetus for more creativity to flourish.
