Biography: Mary Nunn, SCA

EDUCATION

Mary’s educational background included:

• Art History, Carleton University, Ottawa, Ontario,
• Visual and Fine Arts at Algonquin College, Ottawa, Ontario,
• Ottawa School of Art,
• Visual and Commercial Art at the Ottawa High School of Commerce, (two year grade thirteen)
• Figure and critique sessions with Modern American Masters.

EXHIBITIONS

Since 1983 Mary has exhibited in numerous one-woman and juried group shows in public and private galleries in Europe, the United States and Canada. Here are a few highlights:

• Arad International Biennale of Contemporary Arts, Romania
• Burlington Art Centre, “This Decade of Days”
• Agnes Etherington Art Centre, Queen’s University
• Lynnwood Art Centre, “Drawn to Colour” Simcoe, ON
• Elmwood Art Exhibition, the original juried shows

TEACHING

Beginning in 1983 Mary has taught Water-Media painting workshops across Canada and the United States for the following:

University Art Centres; Colleges; Museums; Cities; Galleries; School Boards; Art Associations.

COLLECTIONS

The many collections that Mary’s work is found in include:

• Insurance Companies and Chartered accountants,
• Government and university departments,
• Embassies,
• Private collections in many countries.

The City of Ottawa purchased a painting to give to the Mayor of The Hague, in honour of the fiftieth anniversary of VE DAY.

AWARDS

As well as numerous awards from the Ottawa Watercolour Society and the Society of Canadian Artists, Mary has received an “Art in Public Places” commission, Ottawa, 1996, and was nominated for the City of Ottawa’s Arts and Heritage award 2000. Nominated in 2000 and 2007 as Artist of the Year and Life Time Achievement awards for contribution to the arts in Ottawa.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Mary’s community activities include:

• Executive of the Ottawa Watercolour Society,
• National Watercolour Symposium,
• Co-founder of the Westboro Artists Studio Tour,
• Facilitator for Children’s Art Mural for Health Canada,
• Advisor to a youth group Mural Project,
• Co-founder of the Capital Women’s Artist Collective.

WRITING

Mary has written extensively for magazines and newsletters on art technique, the painting and creative process and the theory and properties of colour.

Mary has been included in numerous national and international biographies, including Canadian Who’s Who and the International Who’s Who of Women. Mary has been elected to the Society of Canadian Artists.

MEDIA

Mary has been the subject of numerous magazine and television interviews and programs. Mary was featured in WATERCOLOUR MAGIC DECEMBER 2006 and AMERICAN ARTIST Fall 2006.
